Byzantium is a 2012 Irish film directed by Neil Jordan (Interview with the Vampire; The Crying Game). It tells the story of two vampires: quiet and nonviolent teenager Eleanor (Saoirse Ronan), and slightly older Clara (Gemma Arterton) who is remorseless about taking what she can to stay alive despite Eleanor’s resentment. When Clara is tracked down by an old foe, the pair are forced to run and take refuge in a rundown coastal resort, in the same town they were sired in hundreds of years earlier. As Clara sets her sights on the owner of a run-down hotel, Eleanor befriends a sick young man and becomes compelled to tell him her story.
This is more of a mystery and a thriller than a horror film: there are no jump scares here, just a growing sense of dread punctuated with the occasional burst of bloody violence. And the visuals are just gorgeous:
Byzantium is currently available on Netflix in Canada and the US.
